The name "sea ducks" applies to many species of ducks that inhabit mostly oceans, bays, or saltwater estuaries. San Francisco Bay is home to the largest wintering population of surf scoters on the west coast (in any given year, roughly 90,000) and that is our primary sea duck. We will run across black & whitewing scoters and on a rare occasion, oldsquaw.
